It's a lob.
Throw it high, with a lot of backspin.
The guy who threw it was Rip Sewell; maybe he wrote something about it before he died. Might be worth checkin' out. . . .

Various pitchers over the years have used the quirky eephus once in a while, but none with the frequency of Sewell. It's generally a gimmick pitch, used for amusement of the player and the fans.

Journeyman pitcher Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez has taken to throwing the eephus once in a while. On August 26, 2002, he threw a few to Alex Rodriguez, who hit one out for a homer.

Rodriguez explained: "You can expect a lot of different arm angles and a lot of different pitches from him, but I never thought I'd get a 48 mph curveball. It looked like a slow pitch, softball really."

The Eephus pitch is thrown overhand like most pitches, but is characterized by an unusual high arcing trajectory and corresponding slow velocity, bearing more resemblance to a slow-pitch softball delivery than to a traditional baseball pitch. It is considered a trick pitch because, in comparison to normal baseball pitches (which run from 70 to 100 miles per hour), an Eephus pitch appears to move in slow motion.

The eephus is a "junk" pitch to catch the hitter off-guard.

Throw it with a high-arc and use very little power behind it. Make it float into the strike-zone.

It's similar to the change-up, but way slower and more sinking action.

It is a pitch a 12 year old girl can throw. It is delivered with an overhand motion about 15 to 20 feet in the air designed to drop straight down over the plate. Think of a slow pitch softball delivery except with an overhand delivery. It was a pitch used sparingly many years ago just to put the hitter off stride. Take a look at the attached:

its a wasted pitch not often used by pitchers its really like a taunt to the batter cause it moves so slow if u know how to throw a curve ball then u can basicly can throw a eephus just throw it early in your release and very slow you can grip the seams like u do a changeup or a curveball

the Ephus pitch is junk, it is (was) used to try and catch the batter off guard. rarly worked and was hardly ever a strike.

It basically is an overhand, slow pitch softball pitch with a baseball. Big slow high arcing pitch that should be launched into the next county.

Don't do it...if you do, you'll be sorry!!!

Throw it as slow as you can and still have it travel 60 feet.
