Political structure is easiest. The Russian revolution overthrew tsarist government and took care of that. The allies said that they would not deal with authoritarian governments, which led to the toppling of Kaiser Wilhelm II and the emperor Karl of Austria-Hungary. (Franz-Josef had died in 1916.) So now the allies had to deal only with democracies in 1918.

Nature of warfare: The trench warfare of 1914-18 persuaded the Germans that they must develop "blitzkrieg," "lightning war." This was attack on the ground with tanks and in the air with bombing raids.

I don't know what BCR means, but if you need an understanding of warfare from 1870 till 1945, it goes like this:

In 1870, the Prussian general von Moltke thought that Prussia might go to war with France and asked the Prussian general staff for an estimate of how long it would take France to mobilize. The estimate was 20 days. von Moltke ordered a plan for Prussia to mobilize in 19 days. When the time came, Prussia was mobilized and crossing the border into France in 19 days. Mobilization in France took 22 days.

In 1914, Germany followed the Schlieffen plan and again mobilized armies into the field before France. It was only the decision of one German general von Kluck to deviate from the plan that let France shut off the German plan to circle Paris. The French general Gallieni opened up a new front in front of Paris at the last minute.

The point is that in WWII, Germany again won great victories by attacking first and fast. So WWI involved trench warfare and war of attrition. But the Germans in every war demonstrated that victory goes to the side that attacks first and fastest.

Unless they screw up.

Air war started in WWI. Germany developed Zepplins that could reach London to make bombing runs. Even though they were filled with hydrogen the planes of the day could not fly high enough to shoot them down. The British made better and better airplanes and incendiary bullets and eventually they stopped the bombing raids. You could say that high technology became very important starting in WWI because each side tried to come up with better weapons to turn the tide of the war in their favor.

The nature of warfare was changed forever because it was the first major war after the full completion of the Industrial Revolution. This led to higher body counts and mobilizations of populations to fight and provide for wars in a fashion never seen in human history.

Most important, new modes of warfare like aircraft, tanks, chemical weapons, and submarines saw extensive use.

the involvement of the united states as one of the world's (if not the world's) superpower and the establishment and the spread of communism and the long ignored china - japan tensions changed the balance of power which was solely concentrated in europe, years/decades/centuries before the war.
