stay with major brands
http://www.data-master.com/hard-drives-BestMake.htm
(i like Seagate)

keep in mind a few things
first the hard drive speed is one of the biggest bottle-necks of your computer

so when comparing get the fastest SEEK TIME
http://www.storagereview.com/map/lm.cgi/seek

also MORE cache is better
and SPEED in RPM (faster is better)
so i would go with 7200 RPM or more

you dont need a 7200 rpm drive if you are using usb, if i were u go with a drive with firewire and usb. With this you have many options with fire wire being much faster. Most external drives will be slow so i would not put software on it, but for video and music ur fine. If i were you browse newegg.com which is a great site, look for the largest you can get, but really only if you need it (why but a 500gig drive if you only need about 250). Again really try to go with firewire (aka 1394) if you have the option, go with a good brand (this is important for reliability) like segate, westren digital w/e and dont spent $50 more for faster seek times but if its $10 make the jump. Happy hunting

Generally the speed of th external is controlled by the usb connection, so drive speed is not normally an issue. Go for the biggest you can afford, Western Digital tend to be very reasonable, Seagate and Toshiba are also very good. Any of the major pc manufacturing names will also be ok.

Megamacs.com (for win pcs too!) has the best deals on quality items I've ever stumbled upon! Check it out! Especially for the external HDs!
