Perfect! You're old enough to start doing some internships. The radio station where I work brings in a lot of 11th and 12th graders. Talk with your guidance counselor at school first, then start sending letters and making phone calls to the various radio stations in town. Most interns get used on the promotions end, so I would suggest trying to get a hold of the promotions director. They'll get you out doing street team work and it's a good way to get to know the people around you. Once you're on board, take the time to get to know as many people there. Any free time you should spend it at the station, even if you're not scheduled. When you're there, don't just pal around... pay attention to what people are doing, ask questions, and be bold enough to ask people to show you things sometimes. There's usually a few people you'll meet that will be willing to take you under their wing if you show them you're serious about a future in radio and that you're willing to put in the work. Beyond that you could get a 4 year degree in communications or you might decide to go to a 1 year broadcasting school. If you're really lucky you'll catch on quick and might not even need to go to college. Be prepared to start at the very bottom and work your way up! No one starts as the host. Good luck!

Go to broadcasting school like I did. You can definitiely get an internship before you graduate. The radio station usually hires interns but if not you have a lifetime of job placement. Only acredited broadcasting schools have the entire lists of what radio stations are hiring across the country and can get you a good local internship. Don't believe the hype it's not that easy unless you know someone in order to get into radio. You need to go to broadcasting school or through a program at a college to start the networking.
PS: I didn't start off as a board op. I was in promotions which is much better. Then I became an announcer and then a producer. This is what school will do for you.

When you start collage get involved with the collage radio station, have communications as your major. After you get some experience, and if you have talent you could fill in for people until you finish you studies, attach yourself to a station that you would like to work for and then see what happens, no body will hire you until you gain some experience, you have to start somewhere so I'd start with the collage station, that will give you the experience and knowledge of how a station works, how to operate the board, do commercials etc. Good luck to you, not many people at your age know what they want, and then stick to it.

start by putting together a resume, have one of your teachers help if needed, rember you dont have to have experience to complete a resume.
Then take it to an AM Radio station. Ask if they need a board operator, this is the bottom of the barrel I am there now.
You play commericals and set up mics for live shows.
Hey you sound like a smart kid so good luck, rember AM radio, its a start.
