On this date the Sun moves within the center of the milky way and for the first time in 25800 years the earth will be in alignment with the sun as it's centered in the milky way.

I find this topic interesting. Clearly the center of the milk way is powerful. Could there actually be a pole shift if this was to happen? Anything is possible at this point in time, but I'd like to see some opinions on this. Personally, I'm going to be starring at the sky for most of that day.

To the user that replied.

It's not true entirely that the milky way has no power core at its center. There has been a discovery made recently that there is a supermassive black hole at its center.

I know I'll be at Stonehenge on 12-21-12 listening to Rush and I'll have everything served in a bucket with Eggs Benedict on top, and for apéritifs I'll have six bottles of Château Latour 1945, a double jeroboam of champagne, and half a dozen crates of brown ale. And, do not skimp on the pate, thank you. nm

Good grief, do you even know what you're talking about?? I bet you couldn't even point to the galactic center if your life depended on it.

December 21st (sometimes 22nd) is the winter solstice, that's when the sun passes furthest south in it's yearly cycle. This is why it's cold in winter.

The sun passes by the galactic center every freaking December. It means it's the exact wrong time to see the summer Milky Way cause the damn Sun is there.

The solstices precess. This takes ~25800 years to go around once. And you know what? They got it wrong. The winter solstice doesn't pass closest to Sagittarius A* until the 26th century, even then it misses by 5 degrees. Some alignment.
The Mayans didn't have modern instruments, it's remarkable they estimated even this well.

So if you stare at your point of interest, you'll be 600 years old from now and go blind.

The First Point of Libra (winter solstice point) is an Earth-equator defined direction. Your alignment has no relevance outside this planet.

I don't know where you heard such nonsense. The Sun never passes through the center of the Milky Way galaxy. The only significance of the year 2012 is that is when the Mayan calendar is supposed to end. There is no astronomical or scientific importance to that date. No planetary alignment, no pole shift, no passing through the center of the galaxy, no asteroid going to hit. Nothing.

The sun does mot nove within the galactic center. It crosses the milkyway's equator which has no special magnetic field or forces associated it with. The milky way definitely doesn't even influence a compass. The moon does that twice a month here. People are reaching for stuff to worry and conspire about.

Sorry, but this is hogwash. The solar system is on a spiral arm of the Milky Way, and it won't be leaving it anytime soon. Don't believe what you read on the Internet or sleazy tabloids. Some folks are just trying to give added weight to the significance of that date from the Mayan calendar.

actually, the Mayan calender, which you got the date from, simply resets. The reason we think it ends is because the Mayans died out before the calender could end. But anyway, we will still be in the outer arms of the galaxy, nothing will change, only thing will be is that we will be in a perfect 90 degree angle from the galactic center.

What I find more interesting is this ancient prediction comes close to the CLOSE pass of an asteroid in 2029 and 2031

It also coincides with DTV, and hard core little TV stations don't want to switch, so maybe they are behind this to KEEP you from buying DTV equipment!
