Since right handed pitchers are very common in baseball, a lefty's release and ball movement looks different to a hitter than a righty's. Also, there is a higher probability that a lefty can pick off a runner at first base rather than a righty. This is due to the way a lefty stands while in the stretch.

The biggest two things are the release point and the direction of the ball break. There are many more right-handed pitchers so the batters become accustomed to that release point. When the pitcher throws with his left hand, it gives the batter a different look. Also the pitches naturally break towards righties and away from lefties; the opposite of what happens when a right-hander throws.

The big difference is the fact there are more righties then lefties. Which makes it harder for the batter to pick up the ball if he doesn't see alot of lefties. However there are some right handed hitters who have been very successful against lefties. Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire and more.

Everyone else has talked about the release and how it's different and harder to pick up so i won't elaborate on that. Lefties also face 1st base. They cause a bit of change in a baserunning strategy, a runner on 1st may do a bit of stuff to distract a pitcher or he may take a smaller lead because the pitcher can see him and make a quick pickoff move. Lefties also may have some trouble fielding bunts because they have to turn to throw to 1st instead of righties who can pick it up already in position to throw to 1st base.

A left handed pitcher usually has a tail to his fastball. It starts out over the plate, then ends up on the outside corner, and makes it harder for right and left handed batters. The release point is different, and that throws a lot of hitters off.

lefties are considered valuable, because power left handed hitters can't see the ball as well out of their hands, theres normally a short porch to right field, so they don't want a power lefty getting a homer, normally thats why they have lefty specialist, also lefties are more rare than righties

Lefties have a spiffy generic nickname -- "southpaw".

"Northpaw" for righties never caught on.
