You should be using the recommended plugs by the manufacturer. They are the correct plug for your application .Most importantly is the heat range.is critical in a marine engine.If you use the wrong reach or heat range your looking at engine damage .
If someone may have dropped the plug before putting it in then the gap could have closed up if it dropped on electrode.
Or they were not paying attention and gapped it improperly before putting it in.
If you are definetly sure the piston is hitting the plug then you either have a worn wrist pin or connecting rod bearing problem At which point you should have a rattle sound while running at idle . If you can run it with new plug at idle pull the plug wire off and if rattle noise increases then you have wrist pin or connecting rod/bearing problem
You should do a leak down test on that cylinder to check for piston damage .

You may have used the wrong plug, they used to make what is known as a "long reach plug", I don't know if they still use them. Not knowing that much about boat engines but are the other plugs the same as the one you are having trouble with ?
What does the book say on what plug to use ? Check with you local boat company.

Sounds like you might have a prob with the #1 piston if it is hitting the plug hard enough to close the gap. This could have cracked the piston and if it did you could lose you motor if you run it by the piston falling apart a gouging the #1 cylinder wall. you might want to take the head off and see if you can see cracks before going out. The reach of the plug is called the Heat Range, the maker of the motor would have to tell you, sometimes there is not.
The reach determines how much heat the plug can dissipate.

Buy the 1/2 " long threaded plug to replace it.

I get rid of the intake...makes its quite elementary. in simple terms be careful no longer something gets into the engine and replace the intake gaskets. Get a Haynes or Chilton handbook at an vehicle areas keep and notice what it says. those books are a great source.

Just buy a shorter plug. I believe that the shorter ones are a colder heat range plug. good luck.

#1 is toast. do a compression test and see.
