Butter her up. Tell her that her yard is beautiful. Comment on how much work it must have been for her. If she admits to hiring someone, then ask who.

I am an avid landscaper/gardener. Unless "not friendly" means "mean and unpleasant", you should be able to approach her and say, "I want to compliment you on your yard. Can you give me some suggestions or ideas to make mine look as beautiful?" I have approached total strangers in other towns and asked them this. People have stopped, while I'm working in my yard, to ask me the same thing. If she is mean and unpleasant to you after you ask, then she obviously has personal issues and you've lost nothing. Good luck!

I would just sorta mention to her that her garden looks wonderful and inquire on who she had do it or if she did it herself. When someone isnt frendly it is just because they do not know how other people are and have a guard up. I would try that and see what happens. If that does not work maybe there will be someone that lives close that may have seen who planted the garden and you could ask them. Good Luck!!

Just be nice, tell her how wonderful her yard seems and if you could please get the name of the contractor who did her work.

You could even mention that you'll tell the guy she referred you to him and would recommend he do something for her at a discount.

If she didn't have a contractor, you'll earn double points complementing her on her own work.
