And keeps running, but never getting to the temp. it is set, on auto, it doesn't run at all. Central air through vents. Even though it's set at 75 it will not get that cold,

Call technician. Probably need freon recharge. Possibly leaking. Concerning not running on auto, make sure it is set to cool, not heat. This may be tricky if your control is digital. If the switch has four settings - off, auto, cool, and heat - try switching to cool for just a second and then back to auto real quick, this should make it auto cool rather than auto heat. That's the way mine works.

The "ON" position on your thermostat turns the squirrel fan on inside the furnace/AC unit. The "Auto" means the squirrel fan and the outside compressor will come on automatically.
If the Auto position does not work then you need a new thermostat. Most have the old cheap ones but you can buy a programmable.
If the "ON" position operates the squirrel fan and the compressor and the compressor never turns off when the desired temperature is reached, then the thermostat is wired incorrectly. If the "ON" position just circulates the air and it never gets cold then the compressor isn't working. If the "ON" postion activates the compressor and the squirrel fan and it barely gets cool, then the thermostat is incorrectly wired and the compressor will need some freon added to it.
The thermostat controls the on/off of the compressor, period. The "ON" position controls the on/off of the squirrel fan or circulation fan, period. But, the "ON" position will also allow continuous air circulation and temperature control of both the heat and AC when you move the dial or temperature up or down. The only difference is that the compressor may shut off and the furnace may shut off but the air circulation will continue indefinitely until you move the lever to "OFF" or "AUTO".
Clear as mud, LOL!!!
Good Luck!

Time to get a serviceman in and let him check it out. That on/auto switch is for the blower fan only. You might want to check and see if you have voltage to the compressor. There will be a disconnect on the outside near the compressor.
If the compressor is on, then you may not have enough freon in the system and a leak in the line.
Do have a person check it out, before it really gets hot. good luck.

With the fan to on, it runs whether or not your a/c compressor is running. For whatever reason, your a/c is not working, but your fan is able to work. If you are not familiar with home units, it is easy to mess them up, and it may be something as simple as a broken thermostat wire, so you are better off calling a proffesional.
