I'm not sure about other carriers, but with AT&T, Yes. There is coverage pretty much only in Ankorage, though. Hope that helps! :)

Ex Verizon person and some places yes, ,some extended digital network and some places no.
More populated areas will work.
Could have roaming could have no service.
You are best to call your carrier and ask this question. No point in taking the phone if it will not work.

One day in a plane from Denver to Las Vegas turned my phone on and it actually worked.
So you never know.

ACS has great Alaska coverage; Cellular One is so-so. I use Sprint because I'm at school in Colorado, and up here I've never had any reception problems.
