There are many countries living next to each other in peace.
There is no absolute method that people can depend of, to obtain and keep the peace. We know the opposite of peace, war is brought about when someone abuses, takes advantage, steals, murders, rapes, oppresses somebody.
Sooner or later the oppressed will become wise and will fight back.
The history of colonialism and its end shows that.
So we start with trying to avoid and outlaw those actions that we know will cause people to fight.
We proceed with respect and fair dealing.
If I was a school teacher and I was trying to show the class what I am talking about, I will ask for the class to write a program or plan of how they will keep harmony among themselves and then try to extend that plan to the countries of the world.
Not an easy task because humans have within themselves the will to power, to desire to dominate others.

Diplomacy and every day discussions are the best way to persuade a certain country to follow your opinion. Iraqi war could have been avoided if America & Britain went on pressing on Saddam Hussein by diplomatic means, war should be the last option. Bribing is some times immoral.

Freethinker, I know most people already know, but you should still credit John Lennon for writing the lyrics you posted.
World peace is out of reach for the time being. The best any of us can do is to use all of the influence that we have to convince as many people as possible to learn to let go of anger and live peacefully.
The only "power" that I have is the ability to write well, so I use that talent on as many forums as I have time for to promote the cause of peace whenever the opportunity exists and sometimes even when it doesn't.
The most important thing that anyone can do in the service of peace is to be kind even when others are not, ignoring provocations and insults and staying focused on the heart of whatever is being discussed. This is what "turning the other cheek" really means: it is the essence of the Golden Rule.
Obviously, there is much more to be said, but this a forum that embraces brevity, and I've already written more than many here will read through. Summing up, then, I urge you all to forsake anger and try to persuade others to do so as well.

War? You've got to be kidding. The only answer is diplomacy and discussion, but the coming together of all nations in peace and harmony will not happen until the Big Changes occur and we return to Constitutional Law and all the current politicians in power are removed.

I don't see peace in our times because the world is so hostile. But if I don't start working for peace my grandchildren will be having this discussion. There are people intellectuals in every country working for peace. Yes even in Iran and Iraq. All Muslims are not bad as all Christians are neither. Religion needs to be separated for government. render unto God that which is Gods and unto Caesar what is Cesar's. Today was a sad day for the world when the president of the USA put his religious beliefs overt he will of the people and the furtherment science. Millions of lives can be saved. Yet he sites the sanctity of life. Yeah like he cares. He send troops to a needless war to satisfy his own Ego.
George Bush and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad are the greatist threats to world peace. Both are potential Hitlers.

I like Gramsci's famous phrase "pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will." All the people who say it's impossible and will never happen won't even entertain it and so won't engage their intellect or their will.
Humans are hugely adaptable. We can have a peaceful world. It won't be a world devoid of conflict or challenge, unless we are all doped up on some kind of SOMA type drug as in Brave New World, which I hope doesn't happen. Humans need to be challenged. Much good arises out of conflict when handled right; it can turn to harmony. Thesis and antithesis can form a synthesis, a kind of dance and unification. The battle of the intellect and the will can produce fruitful, balanced results. As William Blake said, 'Without contraries there is no progression.'
War does not form a synthesis or a progression. It represents absolutist myopia, destruction and atavism of the spirit. But war is currently hugely profitable and the Military Industrial Complex is an extremely powerful shaper of government policy. As a race, i.e. as a collective, our thinking and social systems are somewhat autistic. On the macrocosmic level we measure everything based upon profit and the associated power of accumulated wealth. So at the end of the day, if a group feeding the hungry and giving shelter to the needy were compared with an arms company that contributes to the death of hundreds and thousands of people through war, the arms company would be valued trillions of times more than the good samaritans as worth is measured in GDP and GNP rather than arising from people's experiences and human needs. That is the bottom line. We need to alter our economic system so that it is based upon the aggregated human centred values of people, not just cold hard profit, financial trickery and market forces. This would be complex but with information technology it's possible. The economy has already gone digital. We already vote for things we like or dislike on the web. Emergent taxonomies allow us to adapt and self organise. The economy is in flux. We have to power the change and get informed and involved.
Although the world looks pretty bad at the moment, I think we're going in a direction that could still, with enough collective belief and willpower tempered with the power of reason, lead to a much more peaceful world, not of countries and governments, but of individuals and the small, self-supportive and organically networked societies that they make up.
We must talk to each other more and believe in the goodness of each other through the basic needs each one of us has for peace, love and security in their lives, as well as challenge and the opportunity to develop.
I do not accept that the militarised slaughter of innocent people and the vast, powerful, and profitable interests that gain from it can be in any way called natural or part of human nature. Our nature is that we can reflect, reason and adapt. And unless we continue to do this whilst aiming towards the goal of world peace, then we will destroy ourselves.

All every county has to do is live within the Charter of the United Nations. Please read the Preamble at:
http://www.un.org/aboutun/charter/index.html
It was signed in 1945 after World War II by 50 Nations. Two years later the USA started the Central Intelligence Agency.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Intelligence_Agency
If you go look at the second and thrid functions of the CIA per wikipedia you will find that they are direct violations of the Charter of the UN that was signed 2 years before.
The CIA has been uninvited guest in a great number of other countries. They are the reason that the 2000 presidential election was a Cout E'tat here in the United States. They have been censoring your questions here.
A JFK speech in 1961 regarding secrecy and the presses responsibility to not allow it to happen.

All countries of the world need to stop electing idiots who who have not the best interests of their people at heart and need to leave other nations to their own business. Only if all leaders can look after all of their own people and not try to mess with other nations only then can there be world peace. But hey it's a pipedream. The planet has been warring since the beginning of recorded history and probably a lot longer before that.

Good Question!
First, we need to accept each other differences, and learn from each other strenghtes and help those who are weaker than us. Peace in the world is possible, only if we start with the middle East peace and the rest of the countries will follow.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
