What is so special about the American dream? Whatever you obtain you cannot take it with you. So you have bragging rights, so what. Why not make the American dream a value system that takes care of you in this life and the next.

The traditional American Dream -- a house in the suburbs with a white picket fence, Mom in the kitchen, 2 kids and a dog -- certainly CAN be obtained, but not easily. Especially not since it usually takes two incomes to survive these days and job security is a joke.

Still, like most dreams, if you work hard enough, you CAN obtain it -- or at least obtain YOUR version of the American Dream. And don't ever let anyone tell you can't!

I believe in the American dream but I think it's more difficult to achieve than it was twenty or even ten years ago. As technology "flattens" the world Americans are forced to compete with educated people in India and China who are willing to work for a lot less money. This is an added burden to an already embattled middle class.

I don't know about any ' American ' dream but, dreams or goals, we all have them. Some may take us far from these shores. So much for regionalization. If your heart is right so will your dreams be and could be made real.

They say that behind every great man is a great misdeed. Any holy text will tell you to worship god, not money. Since capitalism is the pursuit of happiness usually by monetary means, I'd say no -- there's no American dream, just the more universal one of being content, happy, loved -- and all the rest is crap.

Well, the American Dream continues to change into something else all the time. I don't think it can be attained, it's too unrealistic.

It depends upon your personal definition of the American Dream. I think it's possible, if you work hard enough at it, have enough luck, and play your cards right.
