In the USA to be a surgeon you must first be an MD. So, you must go to college, be a pre-med major and take all the courses needed to apply to med school. When you are in college the premed advisor will help you to check the list to make sure that you are taking the correct courses. Mainly you wil have to take chemistry, biochemistry and organic chemistry, so it is important that you do a good job in chem in HS so that you will be ready for chem in college.

Then after college you must get into med school and study a general medical course for four years. Then you graduate with an MD.

Then after that you must apply to study as a 'resident' for at least three years minimum - probably more like 5 to 7 years - with some qualified surgeons. Then at the end of that time you can be certified as a surgeon.
