Thats the question. You are free to make an open answer just don't flame each other.

What is it that makes music so controversial these days? Is it because of the so known "devil" bands?
Is it because of metal, rock or rap?

Metal and rock was something I got into around my infant days. And now everything seems to be blown out of proportion!
Whats wrong with music that gets people get ticked off?

Music today is a huge popularity contest. Its not about the music anymore. Its only about the fame and fortune.

The music industry is always looking for the next big sell, and whatever sells goes in phases. In the mid 90s ska punk had all of a sudden gained some popularity in the mainstream before the fad wore out and ska went back to underground.

In the late 90s, MTV started to change it's format and boy bands started to become popular, along with Britany Spears, Christina Agulera. Pop music had a goldrush and so what do you think the record labels are thinking about, milk pop music industry for all you get out of it.

Grunge/alternative rock had it's run, now it was time for new phase. Today, boy bands are no longer around, but EMO is everywhere. It's the new fling, in a few years from now it will be something different.

The bottom line here is that you can also call the music industry the music "business" with an emphesis on BUSINESS from the record labels' perspective.

I don't think rock will ever die though, it still sell big time on the road. There's a huge Virgin record label Music festival that will be taking place in Baltimore in August that will have Chris Cornell, Incubus, the Police, and the Smashing Pumpkins among other well known acts.

I also think that you can eiher sit back and look at what you think is wrong with the music industry, but I also believe that you can always find some kind of music that you like, perhaps a newer that may not be at the forefront of popularity with that number 1 hit single in the US, but continues to be successful recording album after album (like Our Lady Peace). There's always some kind of music that you like, it may not always be at the forefront of whats popular today, what you hear all the time.

The music industry is destroying music. All the bands out today are about as commercial as they can get, and they usually follow a repetitive formula. The devil bands don't exist anymore. The ones that do exist or usually older extreme metal bands that still play or Marylin Manson. Hell, I would love to see some more devil bands, because they're better than all these sissy bands, who load their albums up with wussy love ballads to appeal to stupid teens. The 60s and 70s had the best music. The 80s still had some good bands, and grunge was rock's last great hurray. Maybe, people will eventually get tired of this garbage, just like hair metal.

well,

here is how it works people don't listen to the music that they choose as far as I know. These older generation fat-cat record producers hear a new style and it's an alright style. so they sign the band/person. and then everyone hears it and decides "I could do that" and so they do and that begins a wave of new genres that the record people THINK everybody likes but in reality a small amount of people genuinly appreciate the genre. but then all of the people who's older brothers/sisters (older influences) listened to the music decide that they like it too. under false reasons, then they go and ruin the genre by progressing it too far.
but then there are the other people. of whom say that they don't care if anyone likes or has even heard of the bands they choose, and when they listen to certain artists and genres that people don't like they automatically assume it sucks with out listening to it at all.
then again there are the people who have set their mind on labeling everything on the face of the planet (which gives you all the subgenres that we have come to ignor and throw into further rejection) and they are the ones who decide weather or not a genre is born and progressed.

so in conclusion the problems you are talking about are not the responsibility of the recording companies but rather the people who push out the genres they haven't heard labeled wrongly by the people who care to apease the companies

the two biggest problems are one, that over blown Karoke contest known as American Idol, I'm not sure about you people but these losers are not my idols. And what happened to the winner is the one who gets the record deal, would you believe that after 5 seasons of that crappy show we now have i believe it's 23 releases by people who LOST. Second is the nazi like stranglehold MTV has on the mindless, easily influenced youth of today, they rush out and buy up every thing that MTV is pushing down their throats this week. Quick sidenote I remeber when MTV (remeber kids that actually stands for Music Television) actually played music, for more than 2 hours in the early morning when no one is awake except hookers and insomniacs, or they play those 30 second clips on TRL have let some dumb kid yell over 20 seconds of the 30 second clip.

no one is willing to go out and be original look at all the great music of the 60's and 70's rock was an art form then every band sounded different. From the doors to the monkeys to yes to pink floyd every band was a genius in their own way.

i hate how newer band aren't doing good solos anymore and not being something differnet then the person did before them i wish music can go back to how it is supposed to be fun and new and look at rap for example the so called beats play over and over in thier songs and it not even done by a person most of the time its all done by a computer which is not a musical insturment and takes little skill on how to use.

Whats wrong with music?! Rap and pop. these two genres are an embarrassment nowadays! I cant believe ppl like Fergie and Rianna (and others who I dont know the names, but i hear every time I turn on the radio) are famous for dumb, stupid songs that have to real meaning or depth.

Theres nothing wrong with rock in general. But its just the emo/screamo stuff that is annoying ppl these days.

I agree with you man. I think it's because music has almost become what people are today, they find refuge in their type of music. If someone offends their way of music, then it turns into a nasty way of protecting their music. I don't like certain types of music, but I try to respect all of them, and if someone ridicules me for my type of music, I let it slide, because I'm not the musical genre, I just enjoy it.

I think that the music industry focuses on rap and hip-hop too much and doesn't really give rock or metal that much of a chance.
