If winning is now defined as beating down the insurgency and stabalizing the Iraqi govt then we can "win" but it will take many years and many lives, on both sides to get it done.

I do not know if we have the stomach for a protracted and sustained conflict.

The biggest fear is that other, more fundamentalist, countries over there will wait us out and then come in if we leave or reduce troops dramatically. The future just doesnt look good for Iraq.

This is at least 5 years from even being "ok".

Technically we already did. The goal of the invasion was to overthrow the government and take Saddam out of power, which was accomplished in a few weeks. As for the current occupation, I don't think things will ever be good over there, but I do think that we can make things better for the Iraqis. We need to spend more time training the government and military/police forces in Iraq. Once this is done we could withdraw from Iraq without things going to hell (more so than it is currently). Once the government is stable enough support itself, I think we will have won. Which wouldn't be an impossible task.

Didn't we already win? Saddam and his sons are not in power and Iraq possesses no weapons of mass destruction. Those were the stated goals of the initial invasion. Both have been achieved, thus victory has been achieved.

If you mean can we secure Iraq and prevent a civil war, the answer would depend on the Iraqis. If they don't want to step up and help, there is absolutely nothing we can do. If they want to try to establish a functioning democracy and are willing to put aside centuries of hatred and violence, then we may be able to secure the country.

Yes, we could win easily. To do so certain things would be required: 1. Political leadership decide we want to win. 2 Tell the military that we are to win and the gloves come off it is TOTAL WAR. 3. Accept the sacrifices and loses on both sides for us to win. 4. Kill so many terrorists in ways that make the world forget the excesses of WWII and make no living person among anyone living today willing to piss off the American people. 5 Iran would look at the last 60 years of indecision and get in the fight so we would probably have to decimate their population. (decimate = one person in 10 now living in Iran would survive the war) Political leadership lack the brass Balls to do the job so it will not happen.

Only if we committed enough troops to do the job. Sixteen thousand is like spiting into the ocean. We should send 150,000 troops or get out altogether.

How do you "win" a war like this? You can never "win" when both sides think they have God and reason on their side, it just becomes a stalemate and a bloody one at that
