It sounds like you're discussing two different times of storage mediums: RAM (random access memory, or memory for short) and HDD (hard disk drive, or just hard drive for short). RAM does not permanently store any information. You can safely install both modules at the same time. When you start up your computer with your new RAM, all your system settings and files will be in tact.

Moving items from one HDD to another is something else entirely, though.

Also, comptuers have limits as to the amount of RAM you can install. It might be that two gigs is the limit, or they may have maxed it out at 512 mb, in which case no upgrade is possible. Be sure to contact Dell to find out if your computer will support that upgrade.

I guess you have two slots open on your computer right! if you are buying to separate 512 memory cards witch will put you up to 1 gig then this is impossible. However of you have an extra slot open for the 256 mb memory card then you can just add it so you come up to 1.256 mb ram! You have to make sure you have spare slot for the 256 mb holder!

You will buy a new memory with 1GB on it. The new card will go in the memory slot. I do not know if your model has an open slot or if the existing memory will be removed. Refer to your users manual as with mine I had an open slot so adding 1 GB and leaving in the existing card gave me 1.25GB.

the ram sticks in a pc do not hold any data once the pc is turned off so you are free to change them without losing any data, just make sure you get the same type of memory stick but obviously in a bigger size, eg if your pc uses PC3200 type sticks make sure to get the i gig PC3200 sticks to replace the old ones

Troubled is right RAM means random access memory. Those chips only hold memory for a short period of time as you are accessing and downloading data.

Stiffmeister don't worry man I'm here! ;-)

Check it out are you sure you have files on the ddr (memory sticks).Changing them will not remove any of your files off the pc neither will your documents be removed. Simply this is only Virtual Memory that makes your pc do more work faster if you know what I mean.

I reccomend going for the CORSAIR 2GB DDR2 (if ur pc supports that! awesome sticks man!)

GOOD LUCK!!

Just make sure that you get DDR333 (PC2700) SODIMM RAM chips. You will be able to change both of them out. Because they are RAM you will not lose anything in the process as they do not hold any information as storage.

You need to know if your setup can take more than 1 GIG... before spending the $$...it does according to crucial.com

Don't skimp on memory...go with something good.
