I believe it is a Royal Walnut Moth. It has a wing span up to 6 1/4 inches (10 - 16 cm). If you go to the website shown below you can read about it

We used to have small butterflies that look "similar" to this one we just called "brownie butterflies". If you have moths indoors then sprinkle around some mothballs. If you have children or pets then use cedar chips instead. Be sure all your good garments are clean in plastic bags. Make sure every food you have in the kitchen is either in your frig or if it's in your cupboard then make sure it's in a baggie (like a Zip lock bag) to prevent bugs and moths and mice from getting into them. If you find there is an infestation of anything in your home then use a fogger. If you believe something is a thread of sorts outdoors then use bug spray on them or soap and water in a spray bottle (it till give them diarrhea and they will leave, and it's safe).

You can also send your picture to your county horticulturist or take your picture to your nearest plant nursery if you are concerned. Remember that butterflies, bees, praying martises and other bugs are good to have in the garden. I'd suggest you merely return the moth to the outdoors.
