The state of Florida has been estimating about one million alligators here since the 1980's... more recent counts are leaning more towards 2.

And just to set things straight, alligators have been off the endangered species list since the '80's, and listed as a protected species, mostly because of their resembelence to the endangered American Crocodile.

Florida has also been issuing permits for public hunting of alligators under strict regulations since the '80's as well. This has shown absolutely no impact on the growth of alligator population within the state.

Also, a proposal to allow homeowners in the state to deal with alligators 4 feet long and under on their own has been tossed out, meaning that we will NOT have every moron who's scared of a baby gator out in their back yard with their .22, I thought that was a bad idea the first time I heard about it.
