We're just about to have our first child and I have no idea what babysitters are making these days. I used to make between $1-$5/hr. but that was a looooong time ago ;)

That depends on the age of the babysitter, their experience level, and the area you live in. I charge $12-$15/hr, but I'm also 23 and I've been babysitting for nine years. Plus, the area I babysit in is pretty ritzy so the families can afford it. I'd say at least $8, especially for a newborn; I guess $8-$10 is average. High school students typically make less than college students, but I'm not sure if you'd want to leave a newborn with a high schooler. Depends on the babysitter, I think. Good luck! I hope you find someone wonderful for your baby. And congrats. :)

It seems to vary a lot based on where people live. Here in a medium size town in Idaho I pay $5 per hour for 2 kids plus pizza. That's for an occasional nighttime sitter and the kids are usually in bed for 50-100% of the time we are out (and all of our sitters are near or over the age of 18). Judging from having seen this question a number of times on answers, it doesn't seem unreasonable to pay $10 or more in other parts of the country.

Another option you may be interested in is a babysitting co-op with other mothers. Everyone starts out with a certain number of tokens (say 2 that are each worth 30 minutes), then then you trade tokens for babysitting within the group of pre-screened participants. No one is allowed to hold more than 5-6 tokens at a time to ensure that everyone is both watching others kids as well as having theirs watched.

It depends on the care you want. 10 an hour will get you a private nanny, unless you are in a larger city, then it might be more. If you want to pay less, then they are usually watched by someone that has their own kids or in a daycare setting. You get what you pay for.
