the aol software is free to download onto your pc if you already have an internet connection, to get a connection through aol is not free

You CAN get a free email address with AOL. I have Verizon Yahoo, but I have an AOL email account also. If you go to AOL there is a link to sign up for a free email account.

Most AOL content is now free, Just go to the AOL website:
http://www.aol.com/
However, if you wish to use AOL as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), you must still pay a (hefty) monthly fee.

My cousin uses AOL, and though it is fair priced, it isn't free.

No. Why would some one run a corporation of that size, that costs millions a year to run, to give you free internet?
