I made a wonderful garden bed, with all sorts of ornamental, and bird bath, and decorative flowers. It's flourishing quite well. I have about six feeders with different kind's of bird food in it. I have wood chips on top of the soil, in it I just have spread out some seeds that came in packages. Now I wonder what to do with the shady area, that lies there openly. Any ideas what could grow there? I live in Northern Utah.

Hosta do very well in shade, and there are a ton of varieties. Dead nettle (it sounds awful but is really quite lovely) is also pretty, it has a small variegated leaf and spreads like ground cover. Any variety of fern would also do well. Trillium, are a nice spring blooming wild flower here in Michigan, but it is endangered. You can still find it at many nurseries, but I'm not sure how common it is out of state.

Hostas would probably do well there. There are many different kinds of this plant. They do quite well in shade. They are perennial and pleasing to the eye. Yes they are common but mix well with other plants. Any garden center or greenhouse in your area would sell them. Good luck with your garden it sounds lovely!!
