Take the switch off and look where the wires are soldered at the bottom of the switch. If they have come loose simply re-solder them back where they go. If it is worse hook it to a toggle switch till you can get one that has a key.

not very hard to do at all.
I'm going to assume that the plug at the base of what would have been the old ignition switch is still there (it should be a female plug). you will need a few things:
a multi meter
some wire
a two position toggle switch
some spade connectors
first I will describe how to set up the toggle switch:
take two short pieces of wire, attach a spade connector to the ends of each. connect the other ends to the switch.
With the multi meter, you need to check the five terminals on the female plug I described earlier to find the ground and a live pole. plug one wire from the toggle to the hot side and the other to the ground. When you complete the circuit, (the wires to the poles should be black and red, you will know you've got the right two when the idiot lights come on) you should be able to hit the starter and get the bike started. to kill the engine simply flip the switch to the off position
Good luck

Do you have the owner's manual or a service manual?
A quick look at the electrical drawing will tell which wires need to be connected to make it run.
BTDT on Suzuki and Honda. Sorry, never had a Kaw, so don't have the colors.

Your local police department might have that information. Give them a try.
