Because some notebooks don't have wireless connectivity built into them, especially older notebooks. They may be fully capable of connecting to a wired network by an ethernet cable, but cannot transmit or receive through the air.

Many notebooks older than 3 years have no built-in wifi capability. An adapter is the easiest/quickest way to go online w/out wires.

if one isn't built into the notebook and you need a way to connect to a wireless network. there are cards and USBs

If it's not built into the laptop, you need a laptop card to get WiFi working on it. Otherwise, to get connectivity on a laptop you had to be plugged in, which defeats the purpose of having a portable laptop.

Manufacturers finally started putting them in standard about 2 years ago. Before that you had to buy the adaptor

the older laptops don't have the internal wireless so to connect to a wireless signal you need that card

if he want to connect to wireless access point and he has no preinstalled adapters on his laptop
he needs to use one

you can move around freely.and, go where there is free Internet.like coffee shop or tack it to school do your work.or buy not book with wireless already installed.
