The violence erupting on the Gaza Strip is astounding. Hamas, a political faction struggling to retain supremacy, has beseiged Fatah's stronghold in Gaza Strip and killed many of its officials and armed militants. In retaliation the Fatahs have killed 3 Hamas legislatures, several Hamas activists and suspected individuals.

How will the Palestinian President Abbas form Fatah-Hamas coalition that will underscore both of parties' grievances? What is Condi even offering at this point?!

Anything the US might do would be considered prejudiced towards Israel (whether it is or not). Arabs aren't very likely to listen to anything said by the US anyway. They prefer advice from other Arabs. I think Egypt, Syria, and Jordan would be better sources for mediation of the violence.

From the "End of Mission Report" by Alvaro de Soto, the UN's Middle East envoy,

"The U.S. clearly pushed for a confrontation between Fateh and Hamas—so much so that, a week before [the] Mecca [Agreement], the U.S. envoy declared twice in an envoys meeting in Washington how much 'I like this violence', referring to the near-civil war that was erupting in Gaza in which civilians were being regularly killed and injured, because 'it means that other Palestinians are resisting Hamas.' Please remember this next time someone argues that the Mecca agreement, to the extent that it showed progress, proved that a year of pressure 'worked,' and we should keep the isolation going." (paragraph 56, http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/Story/0,,2101677,00.html )

One major step th US could do is to fully support the Saudi peace proposal and demand Israel sign on http://www.al-bab.com/arab/docs/league/peace02.htm
Of course, since the US has never put any pressure on Israel to fullfill its obligations under its own proposals (e.g., the "road map", various agreements mentioned in De Soto's report), asking the US to mediate violence between Hamas and Fatahs is kind of laughable.

Abbas will do what the US asks, the US likes inter-Palestinian violence, perhaps because the Israelis especially their propagand arm are positively gleeful. I have no idea what Condi is offering.

Really nothing,

Hamas is on the verge of total victory in Gaza. By the end of the week It will control the entire strip.

They have no reason to stop when they are on the verge of total victory.

Maybe in a few weeks when Fatah is out of Gaza and Hamas in turn is out of the West Bank the world can step in and act like it is doing something.

Stand back, let the two factions wipe out each other and then watch the winner get the crap kicked out of them by the Israelis. Why do you think the Israelis have done nothing? They are showing to the entire world that giving the Palestinans the Gaza Strip was going to amount to this type of activity. Once the intra-battling is finished, look for the Israeli army to finish off the winners (if there are any).
I think that Condi and George just need to worry about getting our troops out of Iraq, come up with a solution for Iran and get out of Afghanistan.

Just stand back and enjoy the show. It is inevitable.
Deal with those left over after the battle.
We shouldn't be engaging in the civil wars of others - remember? Or so the Left tells us when the battle is in Iraq.

We should be packing our bags and leaving the Middle East entirely. We don't need to be involved in the religious wars of other nations.

The U.S. has said it will send a peacekeeping force to Palestine. I think we should send troops not a lot but enough to keep the insurgency down. Also, we have to send high-tech weapons to Palestine.

Nothing. The US needs to stay out of it. It is a civil war.

Bush probably won't let Condi do much but yap, and Bush himself won't do it like he should.
