These instructions are from a 2005 Element owners manual. You didn't say what year your Element is.
Turn off the engine, and set the
parking brake. Then pull down the sunroof
lever, squeeze both sides of the pivot
while pushing up the red tab in the
lever, and pull the lever assembly
away from the ceiling.
Push up the rear of the skylight.
Standing on the tailgate with the
hatch down, hold both sides of the
skylight and pull it toward you to
remove it from the vehicle roof.

I'm going to have to go with a hammer as well. Although it may be a little messy it is very efficient.

Call a dealer they will get you a manual read it most people dont....

you should take it to the mechanic shop.
let them do it. it would be alot easier.
