The answer lies within us! According to most of the answers here even if people give up weapons they will end up killing each other with rocks n sticks! Well everything starts with a dream and Y cant we all live in harmony. Its easy to whine but start practicing what we preach, so start with thyself, don't fight on any issues and slowly but steadily the movement will catch up! Everyone needs to follow Mahatma Gandhi, if u wanna agitate against something , do that with peace ! thats the way to go !
Love n Peace!

The threat of force is a huge stabilizing factor in the world. What happened when the Roman Empire collapsed? All the laws and enforcement went away. Every two bit warlord all over the ancient world grabbed all the power they could and anarchy descended from Britain to Palestine followed by the Dark Ages. Something similar would happen if we disarmed all the world's militaries since there would be nobody capable of stopping the thugs who would jump at the opportunity to grab some power.

Your premise makes for a nice thought, but you are forgetting one thing. Human nature. Where people interact, conflict happens. Some people are incapable of co-existing peacefully with their neighbors. They feel they MUST elevate themselves above others and take control. Hence the need for national militaries.

The only solution to stop wars is to teach all people not to hit back, if they are hurt. Not to kill, not even themselves, if they have problems. Learn how to forget, how to laugh and realize that everybody fights for the same reason: to save their lives (their peace, culture, God, rights, food, money etc.) Until war is a great business, and people care more for money and wealth than lives of some unknown, foreign man, they'll carry on.
On the other hand the whole life is a continous battle. People are not idealistic caracters, sometimes they follow their needs like animal does, and if they are frightened they kill. The best way of protecting ourselves is to attack.
I don't agree with this point of wiew, but it seems more realistic, than people get up one day and feel, that killing is unnecessary, and forgiving the harms will cause lesser pain, than kill the others and be as heartless and cruel as they were with us.
I think there is no excuse for killing. Not a feeling, nor a belief.
If somebody doesn't want to kill, he won't - it not depends on, how many guns, bombs, knives he possess, so total disarmament is not the solution.
Maybe I'm too idealistic and childish, but I hope that one day brutality gives space to love and forgiveness.
But there are some bright points: it hurried technical developments. They invented a lot of things inspired by wars: penicillin, some new materials, gps, etc.
It seems to me your question is very important, and we should stop to think over why we fight and what we use to reach our goals.

Anything can be used as weapons, so there is no such thing as "Total Disrmament". Even then it is the beliefs and non beliefs of people that bring upon wars. Just because some says thry are right doesn't actually mean they are. Peace only works when people actually want it and judging by what goes on in the world, not many people want it.

pacifists of the strongest type believe this to be what should be done. there are other types who do not involve themselves in wars such as the Quakers. others oppose wars that are seen as futile. others go to jail to oppose war. it can be done but what needs to be done first is convince those who cling to old hates that they need hate no longer. that in a world without armies those the claim want to rule it cannot. or it could be suggested to those that hate they protect those who are embroiled in a conlict through no fault of there own by becoming peacekeepers or some other way to help those who need it. the world needs more peacemakers or peacekeepers. i do not know if Neo Nazis can give up their ideas and instead become a positive group. perhaps turn the swastika into something closer to it's original purpose make it blue coloured instead of black light blue coloured and become peacekeepers instead protecting humanity in Africa and the world or if any of the armed groups around the world could change their methodology and become peacemakers or peacekeepers. maybe i am naive but i somehow think it is possible. i imagine peacekeepers monitoring the war between Palestinians and Israelis with blue coloured swastikas on their helmets . not likely though as anything of the sort would not be welcome even if swastika of original design.

As much as I want to give peace a chance, that simply would not work, because it would require unanimous consent by all entities. Further, who stops a rogue state from stockpiling weapons "just in case" or hiding them from the total destruction... then who has the power. (Have you seen the Simpsons episode where Lisa gets the idea to get rid of all guns in honor of "william bonney" only to find out that he was billy the kid, and came back to life to take the town hostage with the only guns left? Yeah, same sort of thing.)
Finally, even if this utopic world coudl exist, people would just find other ways to kill each other, disrupt societies, or wage war (say, through electronic hacking, market tampering, food supply controls etc) and these may even be worse.

No because people will always disagree and find a way to hurt each other. Even people who are supposed to be on the same side fight amongst each other. Just look at how home town football rivalries develop and play out. They are all neighbors and part of a community and yet when it comes to that big game, tires get slashed, mailboxes get run down, paint and graffiti everywhere. I wish I had the answer.

I guess the UN would oversee giving up weapons which is the same organization that somehow has let Iran to get so close to a weapon and what do we do about groups like Hamas, Al Quida, etc who do not belong to the UN/ There is no way to oversee or monitor this so it can not work and who would want to be first nation to do this and risk attack from its enemies.

Just who would do the disarming ?

How would you handle if a country cheated and armed themselves anyway ?

Since no one else had any military weapons anymore,

What could be done ?
