I have a HP Pavilion 4455 built in 1998. The fans are extremely loud at all times. I have another computer built in 1998 and its really quiet. The iMacs in our school which were built in 1998 are mad quiet. My computer is pretty low end so it has no purpose for being loud! Specs: Intel Celeron 400MHz, 64 MB ram.

You should download a program such as SpeedFan (http://www.download.com/3000-2094_4-10540297.html ), which among other things allows you to change the speed of the fans. Be careful when using this though, because your computer can easily overheat if you're not careful.

If the fans are working properly the only problem with the noise is that it is annoying.

Usually it is the case fan that is the loudest. You could try disconnecting it, but make sure you check to make sure you aren't overheating the processor or any other components. Make sure your processor fan is still working.

If you are comfortable working on your computer you could do this yourself, but it might be best to let a technician do it. Your computer could have an interlock that would prevent its booting up with any of the fans inoperative, but chances are that it doesn't.

Your 400MHz Celeron should not be particularly susceptible to overheating.

Because its so old, and probably isnt a good computer. Get a new one. You can easily buy a computer 3x better then that for a 100-150 dollars at a used comp store. Or go to someplace like comp usa and get a brand new one for about 300 dollars 10x better.

Loud fan noise could be caused by alot of things.

Dust & debris within the fan blade. //use compressed air to blow out inside of computer after opening up case.

wire(s) being hit by fan blade. // move wires

fan blade hitting external rack or grate designed to shield the fan. //bend grate out so it doesn't get hit by fan.

old fan with worn out bearings. //replace

problem with mainboard causing fans to spin or make blowing noises. //replace mainboard, cpu, heatsink or computer

cd-rom that has cd in it spinning sounds like a crazy fan going at times. //take cd out

sounds like it's time to get another machine 1998 --ewwww

Probably just the bearings in the fans starting to go because the machine is so old. If it really bothers you that much you can probably fits new fans on there, I've had to replace the one on my CPU in the past so it should be doable.

Since the computer is so old the fan is probably showing its age. And if you have never cleaned it's guts it just puts more stress on your computers fan. You either need to replace the computer or the fan itself.
