Which band is better?

R.E.M. or U2?

Or rather, which band is better in your opinion?

Unquestionably U2.

Although REM was one of the forerunners for alternative rock in the mid-to-late 80s, they never were able to comfortably segue into a mainstream band. After their success with "Out of Time" and "Automatic for the People," the band seemed crushed under their own creativity, releasing mediocre work ("Monster") and downrigth disappointing material ("Up").

On the other hand, U2 were able to surpass their superstardom in the late 80s with "The Joshua Tree" by completely re-evaluating the band and how it recorded and performed. 1991's "Achtung Baby" launched the band into a realm of new possibilities. Although their two follow-up albums "Zooropa" and "Pop" failed to wow critics and do much on the rock charts, they resurfaced in 2000 with "All That You Can't Leave Behind," a huge success for the band. Then, they miraculously followed it up with 2003's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" which went on to sweep the next year's Grammy awards.

No disrespect to Michael Stipe and his mates, but by the end of the 90s they had become all but irrelevant. U2 have managed to stay on top of their game now for nearly three decades and it doesn't look as if they'll be retiring any time soon.

That's a real close one. I love them both, and consider both to be in the top ten rock bands of all time. So I'll go with it's a tie.
