There is no risk if you download a reputable, well-known, free, anti-virus from the vendors own website. Avoid downloading from any 3rd party website.
These all have free editions and are safe to use:
Active Virus Shield
Avast
AVG
Avira Anti-vir
Comodo Clamwin
BitDefender
Of course, if you download your software using Limewire (or other P2P) then all bets are off.
P2P downloads are a crap-shoot and are often badly infected.

Anti-virus software provides you with the following risk:
It gives you a false sense of security because no AVS is guaranteed to protect your computer.

Actually you have to take a risk in any free anti-virus and you will only learn by exprerience which is best. But you will also be aware that some freeeware are copies...which is piracy. The choice is yours.

I paid £48 for Norton anti-virus and it crashed my computer! Waste of money! I have used AVG for 3 or 4 years since then and it's brilliant - easy to use, it's free and I have never had any problems with it. Why pay when you can get a reliable free one?

Downloading freebies from untrusted sources is basically insane,
Google offers a very nice free software package that includes Norton AntiVirus. I have used this package with good success. It also comes with a free spyware scanner and lots of other free goodies. And you can trust it because it doesn't come from some no-name company. You can get it here:

Good luck!

there is always some risk but i found spybot search and destroy it is free unless you want to donate, what it does is it searches your computer for existing viruses removes them it also immunises it against all known viruses, you have to update regularly because new viruses are always popping up, then just immunise again with current info. I've used this for last 3 months, no probs yet. hope this helps.
