practice!
oh my gosh! the butterfly, the fly, or (my term) the hardest stroke there is! i cant stand the butterfly, and i love to swim! to improve on your butterfly you need lots of practice, practice, practice, and (since it is the hardest stroke) more practice!

when flying gets you down
when you do the butterfly remember to:
~get your arms completely out of the water
~arms go out of the water first, then legs
~elbows go up first, followed by the shoulders and then the hands
~keep your knees and feet together, the rest of your legs will stay together as well
~kick your feet out of the water to go faster
~when you go back under from doing a stroke, put your hands together
~when you dive down back under, your hands go first, followed by your elbows and your shoulders

Your best bet is practice hard and make sure your techniaue is top-notch so you are swimming as efficiently as possible.

I was a competitive butterflier for 10 years and loved every single second of it. I never understood why people had so much trouble with fly! Hopefully these articles and some hands-on coaching will have you grinning like I used to during fly!!!

Good luck!

i used to have so much trouble with this stroke, but i am actually pretty good now. Make sure that your hands are cupped and are facing outward. I helps pull you through the water. Also right after you dive and you are in your streamline, have you hands together but point them down. It helps you stay under water longer, and it actually makes you go faster. The best tip of them all is, when you are swimming, look for your feet. When you are not breathing, look at your feet and it causes less drag. Hope this helps, and good luck.

First of all
Keep your head down, if you lift your head up it drops your hips and almost makes you go back.
Second use you hips (butt as my swim coach told me)
Keep your arms straight and the backs of your hands facing each other.
Well Good luck
