Sgt. Pepper's is the height of the Beatles collaborative efforts. The original idea was a concept album where each band member was to play a character, but that fell through. This was one of their more trippy albums and the lyrics show that. From Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD) and A Day in the Life. Lennon/McCartney worked together on songs which was not so much the case on Abbey Road or The Beatles aka The White Album.
I would not recommend The White Album for you because you sound like you are just starting off with The Beatles. The White Album was were very tumultuous recording sessions where Ringo quit briefly. This was the start of the end for them. All of them were moving in their own artistic directions and the break up was inevitable. This is more of a compilation than a group album. They wrote their songs separately and ******* Yoko made her presence felt, altering the sessions. It is still a great album but not for a new listener. Here is my recommendation for albums in order:
1. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. Revolver
3. Rubber Soul
4. Abbey Road
5. The Beatles (The White Album)
6. Let It Be- There are 2 versions the other one is, Let it Be . . .naked. I have that CD as a personal preference because I do not like what Phil Spector did with the recordings but most people like the original.
7. Please Please Me- Not a great album but it is nice to see where they started.
Never forget John and George.
P.S. The new covers of Lennon songs are garbage, but I hope they raise money for Darfur.

Oh my there's so many. There's not a single bad Beatles album out there. My personal favorites are the White Album and Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. But Sgt. Peppers might be a little complicated for someone who doesn't really know them yet; you kind of need to understand them before getting that album or else it just sounds weird to most people. I recommend the White Album first, or maybe some of their earlier work.

I think you have to appreciate each album during the time it was released.
For example, as a kid when Meet The Beatles came out I remember the pure energy of that album. It was so strong, it was a magnet that drew us all in. It inspired so many for so many reasons and changed music.
However, you can say almost the same thing when you talk about Rubber Soul or Revolver. Wow! Suddenly, just when we thought we understood what rock was about they attacked us with depth and even beauty. Rock was never the same.
When Sgt Pepper came out I can recall many teens had a negative first reaction. They did not like the facial hair or clothes. They said the Beatles went out with the Twist. Yet, weeks later the guys were wearing moustaches and suddenly everyone was dressing like them and making music like them.
But for me Abbey Road says it all. The first side a tribute to the r&r that got them where they ended and the second side a tribute to the new, the daring, the unique.
For me the Beatles were a concept. Their music should be combined as one entity, diverse and exciting. Choosing one denies another almost as a parent would be asked to choose one child over another.
:)

I think its great to start in chronological order to hear how their music progressed over a relatively short time so start with Meet the Beatles and then move onto Rubber Soul or Revolver then Sgt. Peppers and finally the White Album or Abbey Road.
My favorite album is Help because it has Ticket to Ride on it (my favorite song)
If you want a greatest hits album the The Beatles 1 album is fantastic.

It depends on what your tastes are. If you are into happy up-tempo love songs "Please, Please Me" their first album, raw and 'live', gives you a glimpse of just how great and professional they were.
"With The Beatles" Raw and a bit more professional.
"A Hard Days Night" Perhaps the most energetic of all Beatles albums.
"Beatles For Sale" Not their best, but does foreshadow the engenuity to come.
"Help!" A bridge between the mop tops and the psychadelia to come.
"Rubber Soul" The Beatles were maturing as artists, musicians and people. A bit slower tempo than most.
"Revolver" Raw and wierd. A breakthrough album that had many innovations that are still used today.
"Sgt. Pepper" The greatest album ever recorded!
"Magical Mystery Tour" Bright and very weird.
"The Beatles" Also known as the double White Album, features something for everyone.
"Abbey Road" A classic rock classic. Slickly produced. Their last completed work together.
"Let It Be" Only for the collector.
1. Sgt Pepper
1. Revolver
1. The Beatles
2. Magical Mystery Tour
3. Rubber Soul
4. A Hard Days Night
5. With The Beatles
6. Help!
7. Please Please Me
8. Abbey Road
9. Beatles For Sale
10. Past Masters 1
11. Past Masters 2
12. Let It Be
13. Yellow Submarine

Let It Be. A lot of fans don't hold it in as high a regard as the other ones, but any album with "Let It Be", "Get Back", "The Long And Winding Road", "Across The Universe", "I've Got A Feeling" and "Two Of Us" can't be too bad.
As for an album to get into them, my first one was Abbey Road, and I think that is the perfect one to start with. Not a bad track on it.

Those above are good, though White Album might not be the best introductory album.
Rubber Soul is great, and Revolver would also be an excellent choice.
Get Sgt. Pepper's second, then White Album.
That said, hard to go wrong with any of them. They also have a great Anthology series on CD and on DVD. GREAT stuff.

I think Abbey Road, with a qualifier: Starting with "You Never Give Me Your Money" and through to the end of Abbey Road is as good as the Beatles ever got. Some of those first songs on the album ("Come Together", "Octopus's Garden") are overplayed or silly.

a day in the life{wonderful song!]
ok well my friends and i,along with my famly have come up with a simple way to define their music, time wise....
but this is not an offical thing, just what we have observed, and concidering lots of my family have lived through the beatles era, i trust them more than some one younger.
there are two pieces of beatles history: Trippy, and Non-trippy.
generally all albums between "please please me" [1963] and
"rubber soul" [1965] (which we put as the middle of the two pieces, along with the next album, 'revolver') the start of the trippy era for us is Sgt. Peppers Loney Hearts Club Band[1967]
List
NON TRIPPY[Early Years]
"please please me" [1963]
"with the beatles" [1963]
"introducing...the beatles" [1964]
"beatles for sale"[1964]
"a hard days night" [1964]
"Meet The Beatles!" [1964]
"something new" [1964]
"the beatles second album [1964]
"the early Beatles" [65]
"Beatles VI" [65]
"beatles '65"
"Help!"[1965]
TRANSITIONS
Rubber Soul [65]
Revolver[66]
TRIPPY [Late Years]
Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band[67]
Magical Mystery Tour [67]
The Beatles [the white album] [68]
Yellow Submariene [69]
Abbey Road [69]
Let it be [70]
now this isnt everything!
tht was only uk and us releases! theres also canada! and other things.
please forgive the crude term trippy, i have a nicer one on parenthesis.
oh!!! ane check out the anthology set.
it ws released in the 90s
someof my favorite versions of the songs are on there.
Also check out the solo projects of the beatles
THE BEATLES!
paul mcartney [singer/bassist]
lohn lennon[guitarist]
george harrison[guitarist/sitarist]
ringo staar[percussionist]
im almost positive they all have something, ringo is the only one im not tooo positive on.
ihope i was helpful!
