'Everyone should have a teacher like you, but so far it looks like you're one of a kind', from a student who landed a job in NYC after graduation, when she came by to see me before leaving.

The best gift I've ever gotten was years after I had a student and they want to come back and see me. I've had some invite me to their graduation or wedding. These all show that they still appreciate me well after they were in my class. The best gift I've gotten from a student at the end of a school year an invitation to go out to dinner with the student and the student's family after the year ended. One even invited me to a family picnic. The expression that says I liked you enough that I want to spend more time with you after I'm finished as your student means a lot.

One year, long, long ago, and in a far, far away place, I taught a high school art class consisting of 6 students. Upon graduation ALL of the 6 students entered different colleges in three separate states and began studies that would lead to degrees in art.

Four of the six completed their studies (1 in fine arts, 1 in fashion design, one in graphic design, and 1 ( that had started in architecture) also ended in fine arts. Two did not finish their studies.

The first student now (and for the past 25 years) does design work for Nike, Southwest Airlines, the NFL, and several other major clients. Of the other three, the last I heard, at least two of them were employed in the arts in some manner.

What better "gift" could one expect from the teaching profession?

The best gifts were the special notes which students wrote. I have kept all of them along with my yearbooks. The gift cards, Christmas ornaments, homemade goodies, and other items were very much appreciated, but it was the "heart gifts" which meant the most. There are a few handmade Christmas ornaments which I put up each year. The name of the student is on the back with the year they made it.

The best was at graduation my students came up to me, once giving flowers to their parents, and hugged me and told me what an inspiration I was in their lives. They did not do this to ANY other teacher, among 24 other teachers! I was so shocked and amazed . I couldn't even respond,I was so speechless because of all my tears.

This year I got box seats to the Cardinals Game! But I've gotten other gifts that were thoughtful instead of expensive and they have been just as good.

About five years ago a group of students chipped in for a pair of Red Sox tickets along with a Red Sox hat.

Nothing has even come close since...

A letter telling me how I was the prettiest and best teacher ever. It came at a time when I felt very low. I put it up next to my desk all year.

A hug. When they all line up on the last day of school and won't leave without their goodbye hug, it's priceless. And I start missing them the next day, too. It's the stuff money can't buy that means the most.

Last year, my seniors made me a scrapbook with photos they took throughout the year during my class. They had all my students sign it, too. It was very heart-warming.
