You do what you have to do to get by when it's survival.
What that entails, who's to say? It's yourself you live with at
the end of the day. Welfare. Just remember, it's a safety net
you helped pay for already! Use if needed. Just get back on
your feet and you'll be glad you did. Other ways?
Hmmm...oh (!) ...THOSE WAYS! (Washing cars I mean)

Having very nearly found myself in exactly these circumstances quite recently, I can honestly say that I would apply for unemployment, and possibly food stamps, if the need arose, while I was looking for another job. Fortunately, this did not become necessary, but when one has zero income, and no money in the bank, expenses must still be met, even if temporarily.
I do not think that people who have worked and paid into the system all of their lives should feel the least bit reluctant to take advantage of the benefits that are available, should the necessity arise.

What you NEED to do, is what you WANT to do. Do not let others influence you. If you feel like going on welfare, do it. If you feel like finding a job, do it.
If you do what others tell you, then jump of a bridge for me and we will not have to worry about you anymore...naw... DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU...
Me? I would find work. I have had some hard times in my past and I finally found a good job that I am happy doing EVERYDAY. Work - no welfare.
Good luck and I know you will make the best decision for you.
I hope this qualifies for the best answer....

In all respects, your intention is very admirable. However, not everyone is in the position of caring for themselves in the event of a job loss. Having a good education is a plus but doesn't pay the bills. If one has family to lean on, their burden can be made easier. If there are children involved, it makes sense to see that they are provided for in the best way possible. Welfare and Medicaid are both intended for this purpose.

I would-- but I would be constantly looking for another job. As soon as I got a job, I would get off of welfare. Welfare is good for the people who need the money to support their families and things like that, but so many people abuse it.
I really disagree with people who mooch off the system, and don't even try to work. [unless they actually do have a real medical problem]

I have been there...I lost my business to my ex...in the first 24 hours after being tossed out, I hired an attorney and got a job at a car wash to bring in cash while I looked for a real job. Welfare is for those with needs not those with wants and no ambition.

Welfare is not the solution. Think Big and Be Pragmatic. I would either upgrade my skill sets or opt for change of career or plunge into business opportunities rather than depending upon welfare.

I would most definitely find other ways to get by. I would just feel terrible if I had to rely upon welfare to get by. It sickens me when I see people milk the system for all its worth just because they are lazy ( I'm talking about people are perfectly capable of finding some sort of employment)
