The way to reduce the amount of nuclear waste is through reprocessing. The thing that most people don't realize is that over 95% of "nuclear waste" is uranium, plutonium, and other transuranic element. All of which can be put in a fission reactor and burned. The remaning ~5% of nuclear fuel consists mostly of radioactive elements with short half lives (~30 years). So after two hundred years or so, the radiation levels of this 5% will be well below background.

The irony is that many ogranizations that oppose nuclear power becauase of nuclear waste also are strongly oppsed to its solution reprocessing.

Well, the only way for the radioactivity to end is after a half-life, where in after a half-life has passed the redioactive element has disintigrated into a stable element.

Can't be done. I don't believe that there is a viable technology for accomplishing it. If there was one, we would be using it, and so would all the other nations that depend upon nuclear power for their electricity. France produces 90% of its electric power with nuclear reactors, and if there were any way to neutralize the waste products from their plants I'm sure they would be using it.

It is called transmutation, it works, but right now nuclear power is not politically (and socially) favored.
