One of my favorite quotes: Capitalism is the worst system-- except for all the others.

No one that has worked in the real world thinks that way, but there are still college professors and an occasional politician.

All kinds of people on the left swear it's the ideal socioeconomic system. And they're absolutely right.

In a perfect world, communism would be perfect -- everyone would be equal and treated as equals, everyone would work together in peace and harmony, etc.

However, we don't live in a perfect world, and we aren't all equal. Some of us are smarter, stronger, or more ambitious. Some of us are disabled. Some of us are mean, lazy, or just plain worthless. Communism doesn't recognize this and treats everyone as an interchangeable cog.

In the end, that means a genius is treated exactly as a retard, and a hardworking overachiever is treated like a lazy lowlife who doesn't even do the minimum. A Klansman is treated the same as a civil rights champion. There is no reward for excellence, and no penalty for mediocrity.

Sane people realize this and reject communism accordingly.

Idiots and people living in fantasy worlds (a lot of leftist politicians, college kids before they get a good look at the real world and go by what their communist professors indoctrinate them with, people in group homes for the thinking-challenged, etc) see the perfect system without realizing it requires a perfect world, and tout the virtues of communism without ever accepting the serious flaws.

No but either is ours as there are no checks on corporations: they just buy everyone out. Then we have no competition! You have one company making 90% of cereal, or candy, or toilet paper et.al., under different names and you think you have a choice. That would be funny, but it isn't!

We also have the unemployed who are the fall-out of supply and demand, and will always have them. Then of course, companies think "free" Enterprise is a one-way street and it is their way! No wonder almost 1/2 of the homeless have full time jobs and 1/2 of America families earn $25,000 or less yearly!

In ours the playing field between the employer and the people who's back they make their money off of, is not close to being level.

I am for free enterprise, just not the way it is practiced in this country!

As for the other, I believe in helping those who are less fortunate, those we have created, and those who are the elderly, children, disabled or young mothers out. That is not socialism, as much as you try and claim that everything that is done for people is. Tax cuts for the rich isn't hall marks of a free economy, and neither is Bush, his blank checks, or coprorate welfare.

I think we have a good system, however we have let the rich get away with far too much far too long. Anti Trust laws need to be enforced!

I also seem to have a problem watching CEO's getting LARGE payraises, their wealthy stockholders being paid off and their companies going into Chapter 11, or they are cutting 1/3 of their work force. I don't believe that is how "free enterprise" is normally invisioned, especially since most are on the public dole! Shall we call that "Socialist Corporate Welfare for the Rich"?

wmcritter, liberals are better educated than conservatives, and they earn more money! That is just a fact you might want to consider when you make your next lame attack!

There are always plenty of people trying to resurrect failed ideas such as socialism under the pretext that "it just wasn't done right". Well the facts of the matter are that socialism fails because there is no reward for achievement. All give according to their ability to those according to their need goes against every basic human characteristic. There is a lot of socialistic policy in even the freest society. Pure socialism will never work because there is no reward system for ideas and achievement. Plus you ultimately have to force producers to contribute their achievement and ideas through the police or other strong-armed tactics. What a reward. That's why virtually no industrial advancement or ideas came from the old Soviet bloc. And although China's economy is hot, they produce little in the way of ideas or other invention. And, you could argue that China is Communist in theory only.

Good God. If people are dumb enough to look over the failure of the USSR and the rapid rise of China (once it started uncommunising itself) God save this country.

Seriously, anybody that took Econ 101 knows what happens when you take away the incentives for the best performance.

Sherryn: The problem is that NOTHING is really 'supplied by the government'. It is always supplied by the people who actually do the work, and create value in things. All the government can do is take from one and give it to another.

Sometimes I still do, then I go to Rite-Aid to buy toilet paper & I'm glad I still have a choice of brands to pick from! I could adapt if that choice was no longer available. It would be nice if we all could have housing, medical & transportation supplied by our government & in turn, we, the people would give back to that government by working or volunteering for them/it. In America, there is far too much greed for that to ever really work out!
