Becky, the problem is your question is not correctly stated.
The facts are: the motel gets 25
The clerk gets 2.
The customers paid 27 which was paid as 10 -1 per each, or 9 x 3 = 27.
You can't add the 2 taken by the clerk to the 27, he already took it form the 5. It is already included in the 27. (Or you could say he should add it to the 25 that went to the motel.) That two dollars isn't part of the problem. The equation was resolved before you added it in and re-stating a new problem or equation would require starting from the beginning of the basic problem , not by adding incorrect new data to an already resolved problem.

They each paid $10 and got bakc $1 so they paid $9 total. They clerk made $30 minus $5 for the refund and only made $25, not $27. Since they only spent $9 each instead of $10 you only need to find $27. $25 for the room plus $2 to the bell boy makes that $27. If you count the $3 they got back then you have the $30.

There's no extra money, it's just incorrect accounting -- a little bit of misdirection.

From the guests' perspective, they paid $30 originally, and received $3 back eventually, so their net paid was $27. The bellhop's $2 is part of the $27 that they think they paid, so it is not correct to add that in again.

The trick is that the $2 kept by the bellhop is counted twice, and the $3 refunded to the men is ignored, which is where the $1 discrepancy comes from.

The real accounting is:
$30 originally paid by guests =
$25 to hotel +
$2 kept by bellhop +
$3 refunded to guests +

this is an old one.
they paid 27 dollars, 25 dollars for the rooms and 2 dollars to the clerk.
you should not add the two dollars to the 27 dollars but you have to subtract it, because the 2 dollars goes out of those guy's pockets.
