I think it's possible you have stepped into a portable hole, like the ones Wiley E. Coyote used in the Road Runner cartoons.

That was a mole rat that came up to get some fresh air.....What ever you do don't let it hypnotize you...It will have you digging its tunnels for the next three years at no pay.....just every third grubs you find.
