"Ten" was such an incredible album, and "Vs" was probably just as good. Even "Vitalogy" was excellent. Then "No Code" and "Yield" came out, which were very weak. At least those 2 albums have a couple of decent songs, but then "Binaural" and "Riot Act" came out and they flat out sucked. They lost all of their energy. Eddie Vedder just mumbles instead of wailing, there's no guitar solos, and every song sounds like they're half asleep while performing it. I didn't even bother with their latest album. What happened?

Like most grunge bands, they were faced with the problem of changing their sound to better suit an audience that no longer cared for grunge music. They have shown flashes of their old brilliance and even found a niche in softer songs (Last Kiss, Better Man), but the energy that was present in the beginning has since diminished as Pearl Jam struggles to record anything that is in any way a step forward and away from their grunge glory days.

I agree with everything you say. Vitalogy was my favorite. But it was completely different than the first two; it really didn't have any solos on it either.
I think that what has happened, their lives have changed, their emotions are completely different now than they were 15 years ago...thus they can't convey those deep emotions that they did back then nearly as effectively. I have all of their stuff, and the new one is just terrible as well. Whereas in the beginnning, every song on the album was good, now the albums have two or three that are listenable. The best PJ show I ever saw was in '98 in Seattle. The worst one I saw was last year in Cincinnati. I think their guitar work has been great over the years, but I am done with them.
Happens to everyone. The Beatles only lasted 7-8 years, Dylan the same, the Stones were only relevant for 10 or 12, Metallica the same, Zepellin the same, Floyd, ibid...the list goes on and on.

alright now, come on.He didn't mumble through the latest album."World Wide Suicide" and "Life Wasted"are an excellent show that Eddie Vedder still has it.Yield was weak,No Code not as and what Riot Act is awesome! My favorite ones are Daughter and Last Kiss from Vitalogy, their best work to date, but Binaural and Yield aren't as bad as you say.I dislike thier live stuff anyways so i can't argue there.Lighten up,Pearl Jam's comeback was short lived but still consider giving thier newest album a listen. Was Last Kiss on Vitalogy?I can't remember but it's awesome.Life Wasted, genius

When they come back I hope they are as good. I loved Pearl Jam back in the early 90's and still listen to their music today.

You can only fool some of the people, some of the time.
Then they grow up and start to understand music, then hate your guts for making a fool out of them all those years.
A rock singer that mumbles and sounds half asleep? Gee, do you think he's....?

Check out the newest self titled CD. It kinda goes back to what they once were. They still successfully tour and still put on good shows.
