I think the pledge is worthy of recitation. However, I prefer the original work which was meant to be international.

"I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the country for which it stands. One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Interestingly enough, written by a American Baptist Minister, the original did not mention God. "Under God" was added in the 50s to separate us from the "godless" Soviets.

I can see from some of the responses so far that some people don't understand Islam, some don't remember that our founding fathers specifically forbade the government from creating a state religion, and finally that some don't remember that ours is a democratic republic, not a totalitarian state where people who don't agree with the majority are arrested or deported.

Funny to see so many people who claim to love America, but just can't stand Americans.

Think about the words in the Pledge. It is a promise to be faithful. When you recite those words, understand what they mean - "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands". Is the US the country that you hold allegiance to? The flag is just a symbol of it.

"One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all". If you REALLY TRULY believe that the United States embodies (or SHOULD embody) those values: one united nation, blessed with freedom, that cannot and SHOULD NOT ever be split up, that provides freedom & justice, then ABSOLUTELY you should say it.

If there is a single part of that promise that you do not agree with, then DO NOT PROMISE IT.

Truthfully, most Americans do not understand the concept of individual freedom, or what it is to be without it. Most Americans never leave this country, and cannot even identify it or its neighbors on a map! How can a person possibly understand what a BLESSING liberty is if they have never been without it???

I firmly believe that America is the best place in the world that a person can excel, pursue their dreams, and find happiness. Many millions would agree with me. Is it perfect? No. Can it improve? Yes. But please understand that "under God" is just as much an acknowledgement of the divine nature of freedom itself as it is the good fortune to be born and live in a country that offers as many diverse opportunities as the United States does!

Yes, I think we should say the pledge of allegiance and "under God" doesn't bother me because I believe in God. If it bothers others then they may choose to omit those words; but we should pledge our allegiance to our country.

The original allegiance didn't have the God thing. It was added by the Knights of Columbus in 1954 and the Congressional resolution was signed by President Eisenhower.
If it wasn't there from the start, it shouldn't be there.
How can there be "freedom of religion" if not all religions believe in God and the are forced to say "under God"?
If there's an issues OTHER than that, then they should just leave.

I think it's time the government re-pledged its allegiance to the common American. All citizens of all the countries in the world owe an allegiance to something higher than anything made by man who is flawed in every way.

Yes, I believe we should say the pledge of allegiance, if they don't wanna say it because of "under god", then don't even come here, and personally, I believe "under god" should stay in it.

I think that saying the pledge of allegiance in schools is absolutely ridiculous. I have felt this way since I was in high school over 10 years ago. I believe that the pledge should not be said in schools.

Yes, I think we should say the pledge of allegiance.
Why would "under God" bother anyone? If you think about what it means in the phrase, all its saying is that no nation is bigger than God, and that we can't just go off and do whatever we want without any thought.

The pledge should be recited in it's original non-religious form that existed prior to 1958 when congress passed a law adding religious BS to the pledge.

For congress to add "under god" to the pledge is not offensive per say, it is an endorsement of religion and thus a violation of the establishment of religion clause of the first amendment.
