Well you can try to fix it yourself but without a guage set, knowledge, Freon and a leak tester I would say you wont be successful. You can but one of those cans that have dye in them and maybe the leak will be where you can see it and maybe enough will leak out to find it but I doubt it.

I did it for a living and it is much harder than it seems.

With all the laws on the books and the EPA regulations, the AC charge needs to be recovered by a professional. You mostly likely have a seal leaking somewhere in the system and the refrigerant is leaking out.

Have an AC shop check it out for you. If you fix it right then it should last for a number of years.

I have a 1999 Explorer & also an Olds Bravada. Both of the vehicles had the air stop being cold. It would still blow - but it was hot air. When I would cut the air on - you could hear the compressor cutting on & off really quickly. That is how you know that your compressor is still good. Open your hood & you can see it moving on & off. Most likely it just needs coolant. Make sure you take it to an honest mechanic or they will tell you that you need a new compressor when you really don't!

Well you will have to get a leak down test.
Pressure test
and a dye test for leaks.

After all that they will charge it with 134A oil. If it loses after that take it back they will replace for free, if not turn them in to the EPA they are letting poison air out.
