the new light i have is for my live rock tank it has the light that is really bright and the other is more like a black light. there are no corals in the tank yet just 3 damsels and some live rock. i want to eventually pull the damsels out and get some less agressive prettier fish and corals. the damsels are just there to get the good bacteria up since it is a new tank. so the real question is when do i set my timers for which light to be on?

It sounds as though you've got a compact fluorescent with two tubes, one's probably a 10,000K lamp and the other's a 03 Actinic (the "black light").

Most folks use these to simulate a dawn, daytime, and dusk. The actinic can be on by itself for an hour in the morning and in the evening. During the day, the "white" light should be on. Some like the actinic on all this time, but it's not necessary. A good photoperiod would be similar to what they would have in nature - 1 hr dawn, 8-10 hrs day, 1 hr dusk.
