My mom always made booties for the babies out of lightweight yarn. Even in the summer babies need booties! Lightweight shawls are also good. Just choose a soft, lightweigh yarn and do a delicate stitch so it won't be too bulky ( =

Only just found this question. I disagree with all the people who said don't make clothing. Every baby needs a little cardigan or jacket. Even in summer it can get quite chilly. If you like you could make a matching hat and bootees. First items that have been made with love are often kept as keepsakes as they don't take up much room. There are some lovely patterns suitable for both boys and girls. I would suggest that you use one of the lovely cotton yarns that are around now. Gorgeous colours and textures. Also there are some adorable novelty buttons that you could use to finish the item. Most of all enjoy making it, whatever it is.

I make what I call "Draggy Blankets" - worsted weight yarn and size 11 or 13 needles, cast on about 100 stitches and knit every row until it's square. Made in acrylic yarn, they'll make up quickly, wash like a dream and be useful for many years. My grandchildren still have theirs long past baby & even toddler-hood.

great quick knits would be booties or a hat. There are a bunch of patterns on line like knitty or
( http://knitty.com/archiveKIDSWEAR.html ) or knitting pattern central
( http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/baby.php )
Also the sheldon from knitty has been great baby gifts
( http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTsheldon.html )
I would suggest you away from clothing items. Babies tend to grow really fast and may not be able to wear your knit wear more than once. If those do not suit you, you can always google knit patterns for baby for many many more ideas.
Happy knitting!

Stuffed animals are great for babies.
Here's a page with links to many free patterns for knitted teddy bears:

Just make sure you don't use small pieces on your projects. Things like buttons for eyes can come off and choke the baby.

all my nieces and nephews got hand knit blankets made by various relatives. They still have them. I made one using Lion brands homespun, it stayed soft, washed up really well, and I added stars and moons, just making up the pattern. I like making things that last for the child!

I wouldn't make any clothes, as cute as they are, because it will get ruined by spitup or diaper-leaks which stain.
I always loved using those thick crocheted blankets for the floor where baby lays/plays.
You could start making bigger-baby clothes/sweaters/hats/mittens.
Some other popular items - sling, shopping-cart-cover,

Answer one gave a good one. Think of all the toys you will be tripping over in time to come. A hammock will store them all away for you.

Seems a fair swap. I'd like a white Pullover. In exchange though it's no longer a baby 'cause it spends all it's time answering back.
