I live in Ireland , im visiting san fran in august , I want to visit alcatraz, I really dont want to purchase a ticket in advance as I m touring and cant give a date, where do I get a ticket when I arrive in san fran. how much

There is a walk-up ticket booth at Pier 33 (not pier 39), but try to buy them on-line as the walk-up tickets are very limited during the summer and are often not available. Tickets are $21.75, but like I said you often can't buy them same day.

When you buy tickets, make sure they are from here. These are the only ones that will actually get you onto "The Rock". All the others are just for boat rides of the Bay and don't get you onto the island.

But as you say, this is impractical if don't know when you'll arrive. So, you need to buy tickets as soon as you get to San Francisco. They are available at Pier 33. Most likely, you'll be issued a ticket for the next day (sometimes 2-3 days, if you're unlucky).

Unfortunately, during the summer tourist season, the demand for tours is much higher than the National Park Service can accommodate. Only a couple thousand visitors are allowed on Alcatraz each day (and the people with reservations are given preferential treatment).

Good luck! You can't walk up to the booth and get a ticket the day you want it. Try to order online, that's what a friend of mine had to do. I've tried twice to go to Alcatraz and at 8 a.m. they were sold out.

you can only buy them at Pier 33 or from the website that Just A Friend posted. I would buy them online if you can. I think they are $21.75 or something like that. Check the website for details.
