river water flow is similar to water flowing on a slope , and its energy is basically due to gravity.if it flows on higher surfaces, as in like in waterfalls, then these will have more energy , due to teh greater height/slope :) simple.

Rivers create energy as they flow down hill. All you have to do is put some paddle wheels or something similar to "Harness" the energy.
