The brand alone (AMD, Intel) doesn't determine which choice you should make- different models of processors from each company are faster/slower than their competition, depending upon price point and when they were introduced.
Among the older chips, AMD's Athlon series is faster than Intel's Pentium 4 line. Since AMD chips were more efficient at lower clockspeeds, a 2Ghz Athlon 3800+ performs like a 3.8Ghz Intel Pentium 4.
In the dual-core arena, AMD's X2 series is faster than Intel's Pentium-D line, but Intel's latest chips (The Core 2 Duo line) is fastest on the market- even faster then AMD's X2 series.
So you really have to look at what's being compared to what, and for how much.
For the same money, an Athlon X2 4200+ is better than a 4Ghz Pentium-D, but an E6300 Core 2 duo for about the same price would be a better deal . But an Athlon X2 5000+ is faster than the E6300, it's on par with the E6400.

Athlon is better generally (for the same Ghz). An Athlon processor is generally seen as twice the processing power of an Intel, i.e. a 1Ghz Athlon processor is as good as a 2 Ghz Intel processor.
Athlon is said to be a big spade moving large amounts at a time, but fewer repetitions, whereas Intel is a small spade moving quicker.
I prefer AMD as they are generally better value for money and are better for gaming etc.
(What he said below.. make sure it is cooled well. You generally buy Intel packages which include coolers, but Athlon are better for the more technical, so usually need better separate coolers)

I would prefer AMD than Intel..,
AMD works faster in the transfer rate which takes only less time for processing...,
Better colling mechanism will be provided with it may not be enough..,it is better to demand for more colling options..,
AMD is really an worthy processor for the price which is comparatively cheaper than Intel..,

this doesn't speak to all athlons, but i have had two athlon driven laptops, both of which constantly overheated. so, if you go athlon, make sure that the computer you purchase has a sufficient cooling mechanism.
