Wind starts due to the differential temperature between water bodies and the land.
During the day, the land gets heated up quicker than the water bodies and hence a low pressure is created on land and high pressure on the water side which causes the flow of wind from sea to land.
Similarly, during the night time, water bodies still hold the heat while land cools quickly and a low pressure is created on the water and high pressure on the land which cause the wind again.
If you happen to spend ur evening in some beach, you can clearly find out the wind change its direction from day time to night time. Nice experience. worth having such a one in ur life time.

It all depends what wind you are talking about,if its your wind,it starts with the gasses in your stomach,as some others suggest after eating beans e.t.c. As for the weather wind,I think that builds up over the ocean,anyway you will probably get some far more intelligent answers from someone else,I hope that has been of some help.

Wind is powered by solar energy.
Heat is NOT evenly applied to earth's atmosphere.
(Day/Night, polar regions, heat absorption is effected by water, land, trees, dark and light areas, altitude etc.)
When air is heated it rises. At high altitudes it cools and becomes heavier, mountains deflect the air currents, humidity (moisture) in the air makes air lighter.
ALL these components combine to cause air movement. Generally heavier air pushes into the areas where air is lighter.
During this process, energy (heat) is dissipated.
If there is a high temperature differential or moisture differential between two areas, more severe storms can result.
Of course, cooling causes moisture to condense into clouds and rain results.

The sun heats the Earth, the air rises, spreads out and cools and sinks. These convection currents lead to high and low pressure systems which 'push' and 'pull' the air around. As you can imagine, increasing complexity of interactions between these pressure systems create increasingly complex wind patterns. Like almost everything on our planet - the original energy source is the sun.

my physics teacher said partly because of the world spinning on its axis, but mainly because convection is happening. Hot air from the tropics (around the equator) rises because the particles have been given heat energy then as they pass the energy into other particles they bump into, they lose their energy and the air particles fall and begin the cycle again by collecting energy from the tropics. The wind always goes in one direction, but because of covection in the sea too wind can come from any direction.

All gassy answers aside, wind is caused by the difference in atmospheric pressure. An area of high pressure will try to balance itself with an area of low pressure (picture a balloon - when you blow into it, all the air wants to fill the balloon equally, not bunch up in any specific area). When this happens, air moves from the areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure (also known as wind).
Now what causes areas of high and low pressure is an entirely different question.... ;0)
