For me, it's Martin Scorsese, all the way. He likes to tackle more serious, adult material, each time out, and he never tries to sugar coat it for mass audience appeal, like Spielberg often does.

Spielberg hasn't put out a real good film since Saving Private Ryan.

Since 2000, Scorsese has directed three films, all nominated for Best Picture (Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed).

Munich was a decent film, but I personally think if somebody else had directed it, it may not have got a best picture nomination.

I love Martin, he is brilliant, Spielberg isn't horrible, but I personally have never enjoyed many of his movies. I guess its more of a taste thing, I'm not into the same taste of movies as Spielberg is, but I do have the same love for Gangsterland that Martin has. Yeah he's just brilliant and 'the Departed' was a brilliant film (and my favourite one), as are all the rest of his films!!!

Spielberg is easily the better film maker.

Sorry to all the Scorsese lovers, but Spielberg branches out into different genre's of movies far better than anyone else.

Scosese only makes good gangster movies with one or two exceptions.

Practically every single thing Spielberg touches turns to gold and in all genre's.
Sci-Fi: Look at the brilliance of Minority Report or Close Encounters or E.T.
Drama: Schindlers List, Munich, Saving Private Ryan.
Action: The Raiders trilogy, Jurassic Park

Far more talented.

Of course, before the attacks come, thats my opinion, just like I didnt attack anyone elses opinion.

Spielberg palms down, Jaws, Schindler's record, close Encounters, the colour pink and Saving inner maximum Ryan (ought to surely bypass on) could be video clips maximum directors could kill to have made, to no longer point out his lesser seen yet nevertheless super video clips like Duel and Empire of the sunlight. Scorsese is vast, yet too hit or pass over (for each Taxi driving force, Goodfellas and The Departed, we additionally get long island long island, The final Temptation of the Christ and The Aviator). Coppola shouldn't additionally be interior the comparable sentence as the two one.

I do think that both are very important filmmakers of our time. On a personal note, I do not like what Spielberg has been doing for the last few years (i.e. war of the worlds and AI). Overall, I think his stuff gets too mainstream at times. Worst, I heard he is such an obnoxious moron on the set that I can't help but have a bad feeling towards his films lately (Let's not forget that he hangs out with Tom on top of everything else...) Scorsese is my number one. I heard he is tough to work with but he sounds like someone much more interesting thant some fool whose fame went way over their head. I have to say though that I find his earlier work much more fascinating:

Goodfellas (1990)
The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
After Hours (1985)
Raging Bull (1980)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974)
Mean Streets (1973)

I don't see why one has to be better than the other. They're both important and they both have their place in film today. Personally I regard Scorsese as very Avant garde and Spielberg as more commercial (in general), but I very much enjoy both of their films.

Martin Scorsese no doubt- he is a legend that has inspired plenty of filmmakers
Spielberg can only make blockbusters- nothing more

Bottom Line: All of Scorsese's film mean something

Love Scorsese but Spielberg cannot be beat for making good thrillers (Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders of the Lost Ark)

They are both amazing but I just saw The Departed and I was blown away! What a great movie. Plus, he's a fellow Italian so he gets a few points that way. I still think Spielberg is pretty amazing though!
