I'm looking to add a computer in my back house and I keep finding CAT 5 and CAT 6 cables, I'm not a computer whiz, but I need to know.

The difference between CAT5 and CAT6 is the number of twists per foot of the twisted pair wires inside the jacket and the quality of the RJ45 connector used on each. CAT6 is twisted tighter.

CAT6 is higher quality than CAT5, but for a home network either would work fine. CAT5 is required to run 100Mbps Ethernet, CAT6 is required to run 1000Mbps Ethernet (Gig Ethernet).

Cat6 has better electromagnetic shielding characteristics. Either one can use RJ45 connectors. A Cat6 cable is better if you have a choice between the two.
