If he is hurting he might aught to go to the doctor. A hernia can not explode. A hernia is a separation of tissue where there should not be a separation. It is possible that something has slipped into the hernia and is trapped in the wrong place, which could be fatal under the right conditions.

There , has been various cases of the gonaids bursting do to a pair injuries taking part in soccer , besides another pastime , that the place the gonaids get smashed between the legs .. One , may even get a hernia , alongside with a rupture of the Orich , or .... say the "tube" that is going to the gonaids .. The Orich makes the semon that is going to the gonaids .. There is no term like exploding of hernia. And madam certainly some times hernias may sort of disappear. Your husband probably had an epigastric hernia and that too omentocoele. And while exerting either it has regressed or
disappeared. The best thing for you is to have him checked by a surgeon.

You gotta read this article......
http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/Hiatal-Hernia-Topic-Overview
and
http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/tc/Inguinal-Hernia-Topic-Overview
either way he needs to go see a doctor to get checked out for safety sake.
I have lived my life without being able to afford Ins. but we make too much $$$ to get govt. assistance, but I would rather pay a doctor or hospital for 10 years then live without my husband or have him live in pain.
Please , if you have to sedate him and have a few friends carry him to the ER, please get him seen.
Good Luck! God Bless!
