Try to care less about what other people think, say or do. Much unhappiness is caused by other people not doing something we want them to do or not saying something that we wish they would.
You have to like yourself before you can be happy on a consistent basis.
Try to take a good look at what is causing your mood swings. Are you frustrated with other people, or are you just feeling "off?" If your moods have no explanation that you can pinpoint, try talking with your physician.

you only get what you give. try to reach out and help more. then find a passion and pursue it. Remember that your 'down moods' arnt you, they are just bad feelings. the good feelings are you, so dont let saddness trick you. I think you should accept that you will be sad sometimes but you'll always be happy again. Dont fight your emotions, just dont take them so seriously. When youre sad, just laugh at yourself for actually believing everything is wrong, when in reality its only that hour. Happiness is not a destination, its a journey.

You could begin with doing things you enjoy. Surrounding yourself with positive people and positive energy. If you feel that nothing is working, perhaps you should talk to your doctor or see a psychiatrist for an evalution. The mood swings could be hormonal, or they could be your brain chemistry. It isn't hopeless. Help is out there.

make a list of things that make you happy, even if they seem like small "trivial" things that might only make sense to you..
make a point to do these things, also consider the reasons you have for being happy and don't stress yourself if you are just down some days, you can't possibly be happy all the time and no one (not even yourself) can honestly expect that of you.

Try to catch yourself when you start getting moody and fake till you make it. Even if you do not feel like being a good mood. Smile and pretend until you are in a good mood. Train your self to be in a good mood. If you can train yourself to be in a rut you can train yourself to be in a good mood!
